How the Dwellvance Heat Pump Calculator works, what inputs it uses, and how estimates are produced.

Overview

The Dwellvance Heat Pump Calculator compares the estimated annual operating cost of a homeowner's current heating system with the estimated operating cost of a heat pump.

The result can also incorporate installation cost, incentives, estimated annual savings, simple payback, and longer-term cost projections.

Home & Climate Inputs

The calculator uses information about the home and its location to estimate heating requirements. Climate conditions are an important factor because heating demand varies significantly between locations.

Home characteristics and heating-system information are combined with the calculator's documented heating-load assumptions.

Energy & Fuel Costs

Operating-cost estimates depend on the energy required by the heating system and the applicable energy price. Electricity pricing is based on the calculator's documented electricity rate data, with a user-provided electricity rate available when appropriate.

The calculator keeps real-world data separate from calculation logic so that sources, units, geographic scope, and effective dates can be documented.

Heat Pump Performance

Heat pump electricity consumption is estimated from the useful seasonal heating requirement and the selected heat pump's performance input.

Performance assumptions are kept separate from the core calculation functions so they can be documented and updated independently when verified data changes.

Installation Costs

Installation cost is treated separately from equipment operating costs. Where a homeowner provides an installation cost, that value is used directly. Where an estimate is available, its provenance and assumptions should be documented.

Incentives & Rebates

Incentives can reduce the effective upfront cost of an upgrade. The calculator separates incentive information from the calculation engine and documents applicable program information and eligibility considerations where available.

Users may also provide a known incentive amount when appropriate.

Savings & Payback

Annual savings are calculated from the difference between the estimated annual operating cost of the existing heating system and the estimated annual operating cost of the heat pump.

Simple payback relates the net installation cost to estimated annual savings. A shorter payback generally indicates a faster recovery of the initial investment, but it should not be treated as the only factor in an upgrade decision.

Long-Term Projections

The calculator presents longer-term comparisons at 5, 10, 15, and 20 years. These projections are intended to help homeowners understand how the economics may develop over time.

Long-term results depend on the assumptions and inputs used by the calculator and should not be interpreted as guaranteed future costs.

Data Provenance
