Home Battery Storage Calculator

Explore battery storage capacity, backup requirements, energy flow, costs, and potential financial value using the information available for your home.

Results are planning estimates when source-backed or user-supplied information is available. Missing information is shown as unavailable or needing verification.

Annual electricity usage is useful for planning, but it does not by itself determine the correct battery size.

Use your annual utility usage if known.

Battery results are estimates or planning outputs based on the information and assumptions available to Dwellvance.

What This Battery Calculator Does, and Doesn't

Depending on the information you enter, the calculator can estimate the energy and power needed to back up the loads you select, compare that with battery specifications you supply, show a planning-level annual energy balance, and calculate net cost and simple payback when a cost and electricity rate are available.

You provide the inputs: your ZIP code, annual electricity usage, solar context, goal, backup loads and their power, battery specifications from a datasheet or quote, and an installation cost. Dwellvance does not invent battery specifications, load power, or installation costs. When something is missing, the related result is shown as unavailable or as needing verification.

Annual usage cannot produce an hourly battery model, so the calculator does not simulate hourly solar charging or time-of-use savings, and it does not verify your utility's rate schedule. It is a planning tool and does not replace an installer's system design, an electrical assessment, or your utility's interconnection requirements.

Battery Storage Guide

Home Battery Storage Calculator FAQs

A home battery can be evaluated for several different goals, including backup power, solar energy storage, time-of-use shifting, and reducing electricity costs. The right battery size depends on how much energy you want to store, how much power your home needs at one time, and the operating assumptions available for your home.

How much battery storage does a home need?

Battery capacity depends on the amount of energy you want to store and the length of time you want the battery to support your loads. This calculator considers available information about electricity usage, backup requirements, battery capacity, and power needs rather than assuming one battery size fits every home.

What is the difference between battery capacity and power?

Battery capacity describes how much energy can be stored, typically measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Power describes how quickly electricity can be delivered or used, typically measured in kilowatts (kW). A battery can have enough energy capacity for a long outage but still have insufficient power output for several large appliances running at the same time.

Can a home battery provide backup power during an outage?

It can, when the battery system and electrical installation are designed for backup operation. The amount of backup available depends on usable battery capacity, available output power, the loads being supported, and other system limitations. The calculator reports backup requirements and limitations when the available inputs support those calculations.

Is a home battery worth it financially?

The financial value depends on factors such as installation cost, electricity rates, incentives, energy usage, solar production, and how the battery is operated. Dwellvance shows financial results only when the available information supports a defensible calculation and identifies results as planning estimates when appropriate.

Can I use this calculator if I already have solar panels?

Yes. The calculator can account for solar context and annual solar production when that information is available. Solar production can affect how much energy may be available for battery charging and how a battery is evaluated alongside the home's electricity use.
